Taxation FAQs
Tax on goods and services are all taxes levied on the production, extraction, sale, transfer, leasing or delivery of goods, and the rendering of services. In South Africa this mainly consists of the value added tax (VAT).
- The fiscal function provides for the main social goal of taxation, namely the formation of the state’s financial resources for the realization of national and holistic state programmes.
- This consists mainly of social income distribution among various groups of citizens: from the wealthy to the poor.
- This function is aimed at achieving specific goals of the taxation policy via the taxation mechanism.
Taxation is a compulsory financial charge or some other type of levy imposed on a taxpayer by a government organization in order to fund government spending and various public expenditures.
Examples of taxation would be value added tax (commonly known as VAT) and excise duty (the latter is a tax levied on inter alia cigarettes and alcohol and is commonly referred to as “sin tax”.).
Income tax is a direct tax (unlike VAT which is an indirect tax) levied directly on a taxpayer. Examples would include personal income tax (levied on individuals), and company tax (levied on legal entities).
These are direct taxes and indirect taxes. A direct tax is a tax imposed upon a property or person, whereas an indirect tax imposed upon a transaction.
